Nutrition Focused Physical Exam

As a requirement within the internship, I attended a day-long workshop to become trained in Nutrition-Focused Physical Exams (NFPEs). The interns were able to practice on a standardized patient and were provided helpful tips & feedback. Throughout our clinical rotations at UW-Health, we were encouraged to perform NFPEs when deemed appropriate. After performing five physical exams in front of our preceptors, I was considered competent at NFPEs. I continued to perform these physical exams on malnourished adults, pediatric patients, NICU babies, and intubated/sedated patients. I used NFPEs to diagnose malnutrition multiple times throughout my clinical rotations.
