MNT: Pediatric Rotation
American Family Children's Hospital
Madison, WI
As a part of my clinical rotations, I was able to complete a 3-week rotation at American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, WI. I found that I really enjoyed working with children and parents in the inpatient setting.
Some notable experiences include:
Spent 1-week in the NICU calculating enteral nutrition needs for high-risk premature infants
Attended rounds on unit and learned the importance of communication between other healthcare professionals providing care to the patients
Independently use an interpreter to provide a soft-food diet education to the family of a child who just had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery
Interpreted growth charts and calculate energy needs for various age groups
Calculated enteral nutrition needs for high risk patients

Some other patient populations I had the opportunity to work with on this rotation included a patient on TPN for small bowel obstruction, patients admitted for cleft palate surgeries, premature NICU babies, oncology patients, short bowel syndrome patients, and malnourished pediatric patients with varying diagnosis.
